O‘ahu General Plan Petition

The City and County of Honolulu has allowed the Oahu General Plan to become a misguided special-interest blueprint for urbanization of our rural communities. According to the Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP), sprawling sub-divisions, strip malls, hotel resorts and amusement parks will dominate the ‘aina for years to come.

There is no mention of the carrying capacity of this island’s limited land base and finite water supply that is becoming depleted.  The proposed plan is absent moderate growth controls to ensure the island’s self-sustainability.

Instead, the draft currently advocates for development projects that will lead to increased traffic, continued displacement of local residents, a higher cost of living and diminished access to public services. Notably, the draft revisions to the established General Plan relied upon an unscientific online survey which heavily favored organized development lobbying groups.
